COVID-19 Email from Mission President 03-24-20

24 Mar 2020

Dear Jennie Martinez,

As I mentioned in my previous letter our situation here in the New Zealand Auckland Mission is fluid.  Things have changed and I have an important update to announce.

Late last evening I received an email from President Ian S. Ardern, Pacific Area President and General Authority Seventy, that stated the following:

“… this email is to inform you that all young foreign missionaries [i.e., missionaries who are not New Zealand citizens or residents] serving in [the New Zealand Auckland Mission] are to return home as soon as travel can be arranged. ... The return of the missionaries will be done in a systematic way based on travel restrictions, level of COVID-19 concern, and other considerations. … We acknowledge that some borders are closed and therefore some travel will take considerable time to put in place. We will move forward with the intent to return all foreign missionaries [i.e., missionaries who are not New Zealand citizens or residents] home and acknowledge that in some cases it will be very difficult… you need to look no further than the closed borders of Tonga, PNG, Vanuatu, Kiribati and others to understand that.  Mission presidents will inform stake presidents when a missionary is returning home. When travel plans are certain and missionaries are ready to leave the mission, stake presidents will be notified by the mission president. Stake presidents should notify the missionary’s family as soon as he receives information.”

This morning, I conducted a videoconference meeting with the missionaries of the New Zealand Auckland Mission to announce this decision.  Needless to say, many were very disappointed but I know all have the resolve to press forward no matter the obstacles that lay before them.

We currently do not have a timeline for return flights.  This will take effort and time.  Once we know of flight information for Sister Carly Martinez we will notify the stake president who will then notify the family.  We appreciate your patience in the interim.

I have attached a matrix to this letter that explains the protocol for all missionaries impacted by this decision.  Please refer to this matrix for those details.

Please know that your missionaries are safe.  They will be entering a four-week long New Zealand government mandated lockdown at 11:59pm tonight.  I am not sure how the lockdown will impact the return process, but please rest assured that those details are being seen to by skilled professionals in the Pacific Area Office.  Please also know that we will continue to do everything in our power to keep Sister Martinez safe.  We love Sister Martinez.

I will strive to keep you updated with any further developments.

Mahalo nui loa.

COVID-19 Email from Mission President - 03/23/20

23 Mar 2020

Dear Jennie Martinez,

This is a note to let you know that your daughterSister Carly Martinez, is safe. The New Zealand government announced yesterday that New Zealand will go into a four-week lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. At this writing, New Zealand has witnessed slightly over 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19.  All except two of those cases are related to international travel.  However, two confirmed cases of COVID-19 cannot be traced back to international travel.  Therefore, there is a concern that community spread of COVID-19 may have commenced in New Zealand.  In an attempt to eliminate further spread of COVID-19 and in an effort to stamp out the virus, the government of New Zealand has taken the unprecedented step to lockdown the entire country beginning midnight, Wednesday, March 25, 2020 (New Zealand Time).  In response, the New Zealand Auckland Mission has asked all missionaries to commence lockdown immediately.  People in New Zealand will still be allowed to shop for groceries during the lockdown and our missionaries will do likewise. Please know that Sister Martinez will be sufficiently funded at all times.

Previous to the lockdown announcement, each missionary in the New Zealand Auckland Mission was funded an additional $190 to purchase nonperishable goods for emergencies or a possible lockdown.  Missionaries who have not yet made these purchases will do so today and tomorrow before the lockdown goes into place.

While Sister Martinez isolates in her mission flat with her companion, she will be using technology to carry out missionary work.  She will also use this time to study, exercise, and keep in contact with family.

Missionaries will be allowed two calls home per missionary per week during the lockdown.  Missionaries are to initiate these calls.  In case of emergency please contact me directly instead of reaching out to Sister Martinez.

Here are some key points about the New Zealand government mandated lockdown:

New Zealand will enter a coronavirus lockdown for the next four weeks after the prime minister lifted the alert status.

• The New Zealand coronavirus alert level moved up to Level 3 on Monday.
• Alert Level 4 will take effect from 11.59pm on Wednesday.
• Schools, childcare centers and universities will be closed from Tuesday.
• All non-essential businesses or services must shut by 11:59 pm Wednesday.
• Those living in New Zealand must stay at home unless visiting an essential service.

Schools and non-essential services across New Zealand will be closed for at least the next four weeks.

We love Sister Martinez and will continue to do everything in our power to keep her safe. We appreciate the constant love and support you show your daughterSister Martinez

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  Things could change quickly.  I will do everything in my power to keep you abreast of any changes.

Sincerely,

President J. Alan Walker

Week 28 Auckland NZ: Safe Social Distancing in the City

Kia Ora friends and family!

It's been a really... honestly it's been a scary week. I think it's a really scary time for everyone around the world in every circumstance. The world has seemed to have turned upside down. I can promise you all, those feelings of stress or fear or worry about the unknown, are okay to be having. It's my job not only as a missionary, but as a member of the Lord's church on the earth, and as a disciple of Jesus Christ, to bring hope to those around the world.

So let me tell you about the greatest gift any being has ever been given.  Imagine all of mankind past, present and future, living with God in heaven before coming down to Earth. God has a body, perfect and glorified, He has an eternal companion, He has many wonderful children, and most of all, He has a fullness of indescribably great joy. We, His children, saw His example- we beheld of that happiness and we marveled at it. After all, "All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny."(The Family: A Proclamation to the World)

God then told us that He would do anything within His power to help us have those same great blessings we beheld. We were so excited!  He gently told us however, that those great things we wanted, would not be easy to obtain, this is the nature of the universe. We understand "it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so...righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad" (2 Nephi 2:11).

So, God asked His Son, our big brother Jesus Christ, to come down to this earth and atone for all those things we cannot overcome on our own, and "[His] Beloved Son, which was [His] Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto [Him]—Father, Thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever" (Moses 4:2). Jesus Christ loves us so much, He agreed even back then to do this very difficult thing for the salvation of all of our souls. We all accepted to come to Earth with faith in Jesus Christ being able to help us here. So, here we are. Jesus Christ has already come to the Earth. He was humbly born and raised up learning line upon line, just as we must do. He matured and taught His gospel. He helped people understand their divine nature and what they must do to continue towards the goal we originally came to the Earth for- that great happiness and joy of being like our Father in Heaven. He "went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him" (Acts 10:38). He was also tempted, he was rejected, he was beaten and he was crucified, being "lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world" (1 Nephi 11:33).

For us to have the FULLNESS of joy which a perfected being has, we will simply need to go through a little of misery to understand the joy in its fullness. Before we came down, I would imagine God told us of some trials we would need to go through, mistakes we might make, and most of all, how worth it He knew it would all be.

These trials are necessary to give us access to that great joy God has, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory" (2 Corinthians 4:17). He told us we could not become like Him without these hardships, and we knew it would be mortal-y impossible to overcome them on our own.

Most importantly, he already took upon himself all of our pains and sorrows. Jesus Christ felt of all the injustices in this world, and He lived:
"16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent;
17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;
18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men."
Doctrine & Covenants 19:16-19

Jesus Christ is the greatest gift. God through His Son Jesus Christ, provided all of us a way to find hope in a day when we can be perfected and happy with our loved ones.

Friends and family, it is a scary time! We are in a time of great unsurety, There is a lot of change that has happened within the last couple weeks. Let me assure you, fear is not new. Furthermore, this gives us an opportunity to learn and continue preparing for the last days. This is the time to have faith in Jesus Christ, to believe in Him and what He has done for us. He knows your worries, he knows your pains, and most of all, He wants to help you overcome them and trust in the plan God has for you.

As President Nelson said, the Lord is bound as we follow His commandments. The things we want to achieve in our lives are still available to us in the future, and I know that is true.  What a wonderful time to be alive, to see the wonderful unfolding work of the Lord. We are coming close to General Conference and Easter. President Nelson has said it will be unforgettable, but it might not be in solution to the circumstances swirling around us. We need to continue to prepare for the message the Lord would have us hear at this time. As the world seems to be getting darker and darker, we all need to prepare to let in that light God will shine for us as we celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the first step to the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Will you continue to prepare to hear from our prophets and apostles? Will you pray to our Father in Heaven to give you peace? Will you allow Jesus Christ to lift you up? Will you?

I promise you, as you trust God and give Him your will, the atonement of Jesus Christ will work more fully in your lives. The Spirit will be able to comfort you and your families, and every day you will have more joy. You will be able to see the Lord's hand in your life specifically, and you will be more prepared to face whatever there is to come.

All being said, the circumstance of us missionaries is continually being monitored. This mission is expecting changes, as with many missions across the world. Today New Zealand moved into Alert Level 3, and will be at Level 4 in two days.  In preparation for Wednesday's self-isolation, my companion and I will due some extra supply shopping in the morning.  I think going back to America might be in my near future (although there has been no official notice about this). For now, I've been moved back into Auckland City-- to work with the Chinese people in the North Shore and in Central Auckland, which is new to me.

We are working with those we already know and are progressing, but we are not trying to find new people to teach. Whatever God has in store for His children, I am striving to give Him my will and trust Him.

I love you all!

COVID-19 Email from Mission President 03-17-20

Dear parents,

How grateful we are to serve with your sons and daughters in the Lord’s cause. We love these young women and young men as our own. Please know that with the coronavirus, or COVID-19, affecting people here and around the world, our highest priority right now continues to be your missionary’s personal health and safety.

To help ensure the missionaries’ continued physical and spiritual well-being, we are following the inspired and well-informed direction of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve, our Area Presidency, and the Missionary Department. We also are instructing the missionaries in following local and national government guidelines and precautions, reminding them to:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay in their apartment whenever they themselves are sick. Avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces with household cleaning spray or wipes.
  • Wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (which should always be done if their hands are visibly dirty), and, if soap and water are not readily available, to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
We are asking your missionary to contact us immediately if they feel sick so that we can involve health care professionals and our area medical advisers. If your missionary has chronic or critical health issues that we need to be aware of, we also invite you to reply to this email to make sure that we address any concerns. We understand very well that the current situation may be stressful and cause concerns for some of our missionaries and their families, but we will watch over your missionary carefully and will communicate with them often.

If it becomes necessary for our missionaries to only work from their apartments, we will provide additional funds for them to purchase food and supplies. We will help the missionaries prepare and make sure their needs are met.

These are challenging times and circumstances, but to us this also is an opportunity to continue sharing the gospel. If our missionaries are required to work primarily from their apartments, they will continue to focus on their missionary purpose by teaching using technology, studying the scriptures and Preach My Gospel, language learning, family history, online community service and other activities as needed. This is also a significant opportunity for missionaries to work closely with local Church leaders to reach out to new and returning members, families where some individuals are not yet members, and members with special ministering needs. Our missionaries will continue to go outside for exercise and fresh air while observing wise guidelines for personal contact. All of these activities will help them continue the Lord’s work, grow spiritually, and bless those in the communities they serve.

Going forward, we will continue to send updates to you as mission circumstances evolve. If your missionary is working from their apartment, they may communicate with you twice a week to share their status and experiences.

Please be assured that we are completely dedicated to keeping your missionary healthy and safe. And we are most grateful for our loving Heavenly Father’s supporting hand in caring for them. May he continue to abundantly bless you and your family, each and every missionary, and the people we have been called to serve.

With our greatest love and appreciation,

President and Sister Walker

Week 27: Howick NZ - Hope

Hello Everyone!!

World News/Personal Update

This week has been crazy, and honestly most of the news I have for you, you all basically already know:  So because of the Corona virus, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has issued a temporary cancellation of all meetings, including church services and college education (RIP BYU friends). Also, Washington State has something similar (RIP UW friends), and the whole US is in a state of National Emergency (RIP America). Clearly this is a global issue, as it affects even those who haven't yet been personally inflicted by COVID-19.

But, luckily despite the church mandate, we missionaries are still encouraged to go out and find people to teach! New Zealand is still pretty safe, so the work hasn't stopped. We were initially sad because we had an activity on Friday (when the church mandate was issued), and we had a lot of less-active members, and non-members coming. Having to cancel that the day of the vent was a little heart-breaking. We were really disappointed about it, but we realized that these precautions are taken as a protection to us.

A prophet of God, President Nelson is receiving revelation from our loving Father in Heaven, in accordance to scientific understanding, in order to protect all of the members of this church. God wants us to stay away from large groups (for now), to keep us safe. That's really cool! So we press forward, knowing the prophet has been preparing us for moments like this for ages. Think about all the food storage, the shift towards a home-centered and church-supported church, the Word of Wisdom protecting our bodies, and even just greater accessibility to have enough witnesses at ordinances like baptism. I am so, so grateful for a living, breathing prophet who can receive guidance for mankind straight from our Father in Heaven, who truly will always only want the best for us.

That's where I am at regarding world news.  I'd love to hear from y'all how life is going with all these precautions. It would be good to know what circumstances y'all are at with school, work, etc--  Especially since everyone's reaction to this is going to be a little different. You could use a portion of all that extra time you have to email me hahaha. I just hope all of you are okay and pray you are still finding happiness and joy in your day-to-day.

Support each other as families and remember all those blessings you have in your life!

Okay so in better news, because of these mandates, we missionaries have heaps more time to do the Lord's work. Our companionship just gained 5 whole hours on Sunday to go door-knocking and contacting!

Chased

For example, yesterday we were finding and I had my first (crossing my fingers it's my only) experience getting chased by a dog! I've heard plenty of stories, and it's a lot more common far up north, or in the south, so I assumed I wouldn't really deal with it much here... yet here I am!  We were door-knocking and we get to this house with a gate. Now I hadn't had this experience previously, but I know it's not smart to just open a gate and walk towards the door, because if there's a dog it will come at you quick. So we usually try to make noise at the gate to see if any dog is behind waiting to attack trespassers. That's a pretty surefire way to know we will be fine to continue, so we made heaps of noise and decided to open the gate and go in. I started walking towards their steps, with Sister Vaha'I a couple feet behind me, and Sister Rich still at the front gate, and then I heard barking.

Two dogs sped out of the front door and onto the deck, which knowing they were guard dogs, scared me in the first place. But, there was a gate! There was thankfully a gate at the top of the steps, separating us and the dogs. I thought it was funny how it scared us, but figured it was fine. I looked back at Sister Rich and Sister Vahai to see if they were good.  We made eye contact, like we were ready to go talk to the owner, and a second later, Sister Vahai screamed!

I looked back at the door and one of the dogs had squeezed through the gate and started bounding towards me! I just remember thinking "Oh shoot", maybe yelling a little bit, and as one does, I ran! Sister Vaha'I was right in front of me, and Sister Rich was at the gate ready to close it as I was starting to feel the dog come up behind me. I felt for a moment, like once I got to the gate, there wouldn't be enough time for Sister Rich to close it, as the dog had already squeezed through the small opening of the other one, but I just kept running. Thankfully either I/Sister Rich was fast enough or the dog was just slow enough that she had time to close it, but not lock it.

At that point it was kind of just funny. The dog was jumping up and nipping at Sister Rich's hand because as we tried to figure out how to lock the gate she was trying her hardest to manually hold it closed. The owner came out and snatched the dog left behind, and as we were struggling with the gate she called the aggressor back.  That obedient sucker was off of us within the second she called! We were all laughing how crazy it was as we walked to the next house. Oh and don't worry, we did introduce ourselves over the fence before we left- the owner wasn't interested haha.

It was a good experience, and now I know my reflexes are... alright haha.

We've also been able to see a lot of miracles from doing the work this week.

Not a coincidence For instance, a couple weeks ago we got a referral from a member for a woman who was interested to hear more, but then she moved and was too busy to reschedule our original appointment. Fast forward to this week, we went to go visit someone who we had on our record as being interested in hearing more. As we were going to that person's house we ran into their neighbor, a man who said he knows about us missionaries and was going to come to our activity on Friday. We were confused how this stranger knew about our activity and why he was so kind to us missionaries, but we were excited to see him come. The person we went to go visit in the first place had moved, so the trip to that neighborhood was seemingly unmeaningful.

Come Saturday Night we decide to go back and visit this man since our activity got cancelled. He comes and opens the door, and calls to his wife to come meet us. And *drumroll*** turns out he is the husband of the woman who had just moved and been unable to reschedule a time. We were the ones who invited them to the activity! It was a miracle we found them again unknowingly, and I think they could tell that it was God making sure they had the opportunity to hear the gospel at this time of their lives. We are going to go back to teach them next week!

Conversion

We are also teaching a Chinese woman and her young daughter and this last week we were able to take a whole lesson to focus on the Priesthood. We were able to share what it is, who can have it, and why it is important. It was cool to take the time to really delve into it. This family has been meeting with Jehovah's Witnesses for even longer than we've been teaching them, but lately she has been truly wanting to discern truth-- as the difference in our teachings have been really clear. She is really logical, so being able to explain to her how the Priesthood line of authority works really clicked for her. I even was able to show her my Dad's Priesthood lineage so she could see how close his authority was to Jesus Christ, and how it directly correlates. Basically the Priesthood is really cool, and it's part of the reason we sustain our living prophets and apostles. I could say so much more about it, but I will just say, this family is on the covenant path, they are being actively converted to the Lord.  Each lesson we teach, we can see the doctrine just clicks- it makes sense in their hearts and minds. That's what truth does, it gives your mind peace. It's been amazing to be a part of their conversion process and see them change and truly grow as individuals.

Sacrament
We are meant to have sacrament at different members' houses each week, which is really cool. Although, within the Chinese Branch we haven't received these particular accommodations, so with transfers I don't know if I'll be receiving the sacrament. Either way it's been cool to see priesthood holders around the world have the opportunity to use the power of God in their homes.

Transfers

We have transfer calls today/tomorrow and we will be swapping on Wednesday!! This means I have no idea where I will be assigned, or who I will be working with by the next time I write. I might be even be moving house again. So that is going to be the main excitement of this upcoming week.

As far as a spiritual thought goes, I would direct you all to the comforting words of the prophet (Russel M Nelson). Know that those blessings you desire of the Lord will still surely be given you in due time as you follow and trust him!
https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/president-nelson-message-covid-19

I love you all, and please know you are not alone in whatever circumstance you are in.
